Bluejays and Bobcats and Bears, oh my!

One of my favorite things of living up here in Lake Arrowhead is the wildlife.  I have set up a veritable buffet in one of my trees of 3 bird feeders, a hummingbird sugar water feeder and a bird bath.  I love watching all the different furry and feathered critters that come to visit.    When I first moved up here I got the book Birds of the San Bernardino Mountains which has helped me identify all the different birds.   Ideally I would have loved to put photos I took myself but being able to get the shot in time without scaring them away has proved impossible.    So I've pulled the photos from The Cornell Lab website, All About Birds.   These are all the different kinds of birds I've seen at my feeders, so far.

"Where's MY feeder?" so I added one with sugar water.

My favorite!   I only saw it once.  It flew up to my

The dove looks at me mournfully as it's a
little too big to easily eat at the feeder.

Not sure why they're called that.  Clearly not purple.

These birds get a bad rap but I like them.  One day I was leaning
against a tree trunk feel emo and one started dropping bits of bark
on my head.  Not sure why but I found it amusing.

I love these birds.  I have seen them around but they
only recently started coming to my feeders.

He's pretty big but is managing to feed at my feeders.

Another favorite and I've only seen it once!
Chipmunk (not a bird)
The cutest!  They also love to feed at my bird feeders.
I had to chase one out of my house before my dog ate it.

I use Tommy's Bird Watches Deluxe bird seed.  It comes in a 20 pound bag for about $25.  I buy it at Tommy's Pet Studio in Blue Jay.   The birds easily go through 2 pounds of bird seed a day.  I once tried to buy some cheaper bird seed that ran about $8 for 20 pounds.   I was surprised the first day as all the seed was gone!   How could they eat it that fast?  They hadn't.  My squirrels were so mad at the cheap seed that they dumped it all over the ground.   So back to the fancy seed...

Snow Squirrel
I gave him his own feeder so he wouldn't have to do acrobatics
hanging from the branches upside down.  It doesn't stop him.

As we all know birds attract cats...  One day I opened my front door to one of these:

Bobcat

I quickly picked up my dog and followed the cat as it ran off and we watched each other for a few moments (safely from a distance).  I decided that the Bobcat was my spirit animal. :)   I was mesmerized by it and that experience is one of the highlights of my time here.

Otherwise I've seen plenty of coyotes which I'm less excited by as I have little dogs.   They're also much bigger up in the mountains than the scrawny coyotes I was used to seeing in Los Angeles.   I've seen lots of raccoon tracks in the snow around my house.   I've yet to see a bear, sadly.  However my neighbor Maegan has seen them in her trash and here's a link to her blog post about it.   I can't wait to see one!  (safely from a distance)  :)  Mountain lions...not so much.

Stellar Jays in my tree.

Summertime...and the living is easy....

Sitting on the dock wasting time in Lake Arrowhead

It's almost Summer! After surviving my first winter in the mountains I was really happy to see the first signs of spring when my daffodils started to sprout. Then we had a surprise snow and I was worried they would die but they didn't. :) Now the daffodils have withered and it's almost summertime!

Summer in Lake Arrowhead is so much fun. We have the Summer Concert Series in the Village. There's kayaking, water skiing, boating, paddleboarding, hiking etc.  We have the most spectacular fireworks over the lake for the 4th of July.  Last year I was in awe watching the fireworks. The air was clear and seeing the fireworks reflected in the lake and all the boats with their twinkling lights was just magical. This year the fireworks will be on July 3rd.   If you want to come up for a visit the Lake Arrowhead Resort & Spa is really nice and right on the lake.  Otherwise there are plenty of vacation rentals on Airbnb and VRBO.  (make sure the rental comes with a lake rights pass!)  Of course there are also many great properties available around the lake at great prices.  It's still a buyers market!

It's also significantly cooler up here while temperatures are blazing down in the flatlands. This summer if you're tired of the sweltering heat come up the mountain for some fresh air!  Lake Arrowhead is only a 90 minute drive from Los Angeles.  In the meantime here are some tips to staying cool:

Great Places to eat in and around Lake Arrowhead - The Grill at Antler's Inn

The Grill at Antler's Inn

Living in Los Angeles I was used to eating in great restaurants on a regular basis.  When I was at home, the app Eat24 was my friend- in other words, I didn't cook much.  Since I've been living in Lake Arrowhead I pretty much eat in all the time as there's not much food delivery on the mountain.   So when I go out to eat at one of my favorite restaurants, I'm very excited.  Like the other night, I was invited to The Grill at Antler's Inn - one of our best restaurants.   Not only is the food excellent but the ambiance is great.   Antler's Inn is a historic landmark and built like a log cabin.

The waiter told me the chandelier was used in the film Pirates of the Caribbean and Johnny Depp swung from it!

I pretty much order Spaghetti Bolognese- my ultimate comfort food- whenever it's on the menu.   The Bolognese Spaghettini at Antler's Inn is DELICIOUS.     I had to keep remembering not to tear into my food like a prisoner who just got out on parole and take some photos first.

Spaghettini Bolognese - so good.

The Lemon Cheesecake.  Forget about it.   As my dinner companion exclaimed after he tried a small bite- "It's the best damn thing I've ever had."  A couple of bites later, he added- "In my life!"

Lemon Cheesecake.  Highly recommended.  So light and delicious.

Plus it's in Twin Peaks.   Which in and of itself is cool.  I'm obsessed with the idea of making a new show called Twin Peaks, CA.   It's a small gritty mountain town.  There's a secret Scientology compound.  I mean...   If you want to go on a weekend make sure you make reservations.  They also have a sushi bar upstairs Wednesday through Saturdays.
