Fall is in the air plus my Real Estate picks for the week.

Fall is in the air up here in beautiful Lake Arrowhead.  The leaves are starting to change colors and there is a crispness in the air.   It is the perfect time for a visit as it's quieter up here on the mountain in the fall and yet one of the most beautiful seasons.   Unlike Los Angeles it's a buyers market up here!  Below I want to share with you three different listings currently for sale.

Labor Day Lake Life in Lake Arrowhead

I was so happy that I got to experience Labor Day with a boat ride on beautiful Lake Arrowhead.  It really is SoCal's best kept secret.   Even on a busy day such as Labor Day the lake is not crowded as it's private to homeowners of the Arrowhead Woods and their guests.   I often feel as though I'm living in an idyllic paradise from a simpler time.

On Lake Arrowhead
Monte enjoying the good life.

I even got to bring my dogs Monte and Ruby who thoroughly enjoyed the ride.  (I did forget to bring their life jackets! Next time...)

Ruby enjoying the views and fresh alpine air.

We toured all around the lake so that I could see all the lakefronts up close...

It was fun to see my favorite lakefront mansions up close!

Then it was time to drop anchor in Meadow Bay and we napped, swam, sunned, fished and watched the water skiers.

 Ruby relaxing in the shade

I thought I knew how great Lake Arrowhead was before but now I really know how great it can be. It's so relaxing and fun to be in a boat on a lake, in a forest, on top of a mountain one mile high in the sky!

So beautiful.

I'm now thinking a dock and boat are in my future.  Lakefront properties on Lake Arrowhead currently start at $899k and go up to $12.5m  There are currently 19 lakefronts on the market for under 2 million.   Considering the prices of homes in Los Angeles - these are steal for such luxury and only 90 minutes but a World away!  You don't have to live in a lakefront to have a boat or a dock however!  Homes in the Arrowhead Woods which include "lake rights" currently start around $250k

A Mid Century Lakefront for sale.
This gorgeous 4 bedroom, 4 bath, 3060 sq foot midcentury lakefront is currently listed at $1,849,000  It comes with its own private dock house complete with utilities, wifi and fridge.  Please contact me  for more information.  (listing courtesy of Debra Parkinson Dilbeck Real Estate)

Kayaking to Lone Pine Island in Lake Arrowhead. The Good Life.

One of my favorite things to do in Lake Arrowhead is to take the kayaks out and paddle to Lone Pine Island.   We packed a simple picnic lunch, put the life jackets on the dogs and off we went.   Some days are a more leisurely paddle than others in terms of the wind and boats causing waves. Regardless it's always fun and great exercise.   If you're an early morning person- the lake is like glass at 7am.  (I'm not a morning person.)

Ruby thinks she's Leonardo DiCaprio in Titanic.

Lone Pine Island is a tiny island in Blue Jay Bay.   There's a little sandy beach where you can relax and picnic.  If you venture out into the island you'll find a lone bench with a lovely view.   I've been to the island several times and often we're the only ones there.   It's such a special place.   Because Lake Arrowhead is private to homeowners in the Arrowhead Woods- the lake is never crowded. (except for maybe on the 4th of July!)

We lounged for several hours in the sun doing absolutely nothing but enjoying the good life.  When it was time to go we packed up our stuff, got the life jackets back on the dogs and headed home.

Good night Lake Arrowhead.  Thank you for being so awesome.

If you don't own property in the Arrowhead Woods and have lake rights (or have a friend that does) there are other options on the mountain for some lake action.  Lake Gregory in nearby Crestline has kayak rentals.  When I first moved to the mountain I went kayaking in Lake Gregory and loved it. They also have what looks like a pretty fun water park for kids in the middle of the lake.

The Arrowhead Villas, Bugsy Siegel and a cabin for sale.

I live close to the Arrowhead Villas in Lake Arrowhead and it's one of my favorite neighborhoods.   The Villas is the home of the Tudor House and Bracken Fern Manor and it's loaded with history.   Here is an excerpt of an article from the Alpenhorn News with some of the fascinating details of its Hollywood star heyday and mobster ties:

By Karen Burton

Roaring Twenties at the Tudor House and Manor

"Rumor has it that mobster Benjamin “Bugsy” Siegel, gunned down at his girlfriend’s Los Angeles estate and front man for the Las Vegas’ 1940s Flamingo Hotel, was Kingpin for Club Arrowhead of the Pines, a private speakeasy, bordello, and casino opened in the Arrowhead Villas area of Lake Arrowhead in the mid 1920s. More rumor has it that the money behind it came from the Chicago syndicate. Depending on whom you talk to, some folks say the rumors are true. Others say they are not."

"Former innkeeper and owner, Cheryl Weaver, of Bracken Fern Manor across the street from the Tudor House, insists the rumors are true. Having restored and operated the secluded bed and breakfast inn from 1989 to 2010, and an avid historian, she combed documents in her work to have the remote Arrowhead Villa’s property designated as a county and state Historical Point of Interest. She says, “Anyone can go to the Arrowhead Villas Mutual Service Company and research the original administration documents that are on file.”"

"Other historians support that some of these Prohibition-era legends may be true. With the 18th Amendment banning the production, selling, transporting and importing of alcoholic beverages in 1920, bootlegging became a booming business. While America officially went dry, speakeasy clubs were in there heyday, and the behind-the-pines, hidden mountain Club “quickly became very popular with the Hollywood crowd … with dancing, drinking and gambling,” cites mountain historian Rhea-Francis Tetley."

"The underground spring water that flowed through the property was used to make high-quality bootlegging gin. Tetley confirms, “It is believed and somewhat documented that movie stars, such as Jack Benny, drove up to vacation in Lake Arrowhead, partied at the lake, and then filled their vehicles’ ‘second gas tanks’…before leaving for home.”"

"According to Weaver, other celebrities and moguls included Randolph Hearst, Clark Cable, Carol Lombard, Marion Davies, and the Marx Brothers, The Atkins Development Corporation of Los Angeles, which Weaver believes was fronted with funds by the syndicate, started developing the property in 1924 and opened its doors around 1926. One of the first California time shares, $250 bought a lifetime membership with a guaranteed annual two week stay. Courtesy of Keller, its brochure hyped “160 acres of wooded land, ten miles of private roads, clubhouse, cottages, and every accessory for recreation…” In the surrounding woods above the Club House, the Bath House, the spring-fed swimming pool, a private gas station, horse stables, putting greens and tennis courts, were the 80 original cabins, rented for $2.00/day, some of which are still standing in Arrowhead Villas today."  Click here for full article.

Arrowhead Villas Cabin in the Woods

I took a client around yesterday looking at properties for sale in the Villas and I was really taken by this wonderful cabin.  It would make a great writers retreat and/or investment property you could rent out to vacationers when you're not using it yourself.  When I opened the front door all I saw were windows with dappled sunlight coming through the cedar, pine and dogwood trees.   Just gorgeous. The house is on 2 lots and is surrounded by vacant lots on either side for greater privacy.  The deck looks out onto the forest.  It's so peaceful and lovely. The kitchen has been upgraded and it's just all over a great deal.  I wish I could buy it!  It has 2 bedrooms and 1.5 baths.   The asking price is $179,000  The photos don't do it justice.  I couldn't capture the feeling of nature, peace and seclusion this cabin has.  Please call or message me at 213-634-2298 or email me if you're interested in seeing it or for more information about other available properties in the Arrowhead area. (listing courtesy of Barry Lieberman at Remax Lakeside)

The San Bernardino Flying Squirrels

I recently did a blog post about all the feathered and furry critters that have visited my bird feeders up here in Lake Arrowhead.   Last night I discovered that I have also been feeding the elusive and rare San Bernardino Flying Squirrel!  One night last year I was sitting out on my deck talking to a friend and something flew over my head.   I turned to look in the direction it was flying and saw a cute squirrel like critter in the tree looking at me with big eyes.   Now I wasn't entirely sober so I was confused- did this squirrel just fly?   I ended up half convincing myself that a bat just flew over my head at the same time a squirrel just happened to be hanging out in the tree.

Well I can now confirm that it WAS a flying squirrel and not only that - there are two of them!   And they have been eating from my bird feeders late at night unbeknownst to me.

Apparently the San Bernardino Flying Squirrels are a rare subspecies of flying squirrels: http://www.sbsun.com/environment-and-nature/20150601/forest-officials-seek-publics-help-to-find-elusive-squirrel

I managed to get some photos but they're not great as I didn't want to get too close and scare them away.

flying squirrel,lake arrowhead,
Woohoo!  This is what they actually look like.

Man, are they cute.   Like little chinchillas with wings.   They just kept flying over my head back and forth putting on quite the Cirque du Flying Squirrel production.   Just another reason why I love living in the mountains...

Bluejays and Bobcats and Bears, oh my!

lake arrowhead, squirrel
Squirrel eating upside while his buddy spots him below.

One of my favorite things of living up here in Lake Arrowhead is the wildlife.  I have set up a veritable buffet in one of my trees of 3 bird feeders, a hummingbird sugar water feeder and a bird bath.  I love watching all the different furry and feathered critters that come to visit.    When I first moved up here I got the book Birds of the San Bernardino Mountains which has helped me identify all the different birds.   Ideally I would have loved to put photos I took myself but being able to get the shot in time without scaring them away has proved impossible.    So I've pulled the photos from The Cornell Lab website, All About Birds.   These are all the different kinds of birds I've seen at my feeders, so far.

Another favorite and I've only seen it once!
Chipmunk (not a bird)
The cutest!  They also love to feed at my bird feeders.
I had to chase one out of my house before my dog ate it.

I use Tommy's Bird Watches Deluxe bird seed.  It comes in a 20 pound bag for about $25.  I buy it at Tommy's Pet Studio in Blue Jay.   The birds easily go through 2 pounds of bird seed a day.  I once tried to buy some cheaper bird seed that ran about $8 for 20 pounds.   I was surprised the first day as all the seed was gone!   How could they eat it that fast?  They hadn't.  My squirrels were so mad at the cheap seed that they dumped it all over the ground.   So back to the fancy seed...

Snow Squirrel
I gave him his own feeder so he wouldn't have to do acrobatics
hanging from the branches upside down.  It doesn't stop him.

As we all know birds attract cats...  One day I opened my front door to one of these:

Bobcat

I quickly picked up my dog and followed the cat as it ran off and we watched each other for a few moments (safely from a distance).  I decided that the Bobcat was my spirit animal. :)   I was mesmerized by it and that experience is one of the highlights of my time here.

Otherwise I've seen plenty of coyotes which I'm less excited by as I have little dogs.   They're also much bigger up in the mountains than the scrawny coyotes I was used to seeing in Los Angeles.   I've seen lots of raccoon tracks in the snow around my house.   I've yet to see a bear, sadly.  However my neighbor Maegan has seen them in her trash and here's a link to her blog post about it.   I can't wait to see one!  (safely from a distance)  :)  Mountain lions...not so much.

Stellar Jays in my tree.
